how to tie a tieThere are many styles of ties, but with the exception of bowties and cravats, most ties are tied the same way. To tie a tie, you must first flip up your shirt collar to give yourself some room to maneuver. You’ll likely have to do this a couple of time – at least, to get the length right, so you’ll want to avoid buttoning down your collar until the tie is just right.

Tying a Tie

Drape the tie around your neck and arrange it so that the pretty side is facing out – you’ll set this at the back of your collar where the tie is actually touching your shirt.

Then, pull the fatter side of the tie down past your belt buckle (you should be wearing a belt most likely if you’re wearing a tie). Grasp the fat side of the tie in your right hand and the this side of the tie in your left.

Pass the fat side of the tie over the thin side. Lay it diagonally across. Then, bring the fat end back under the thin part (which should be hanging straight thanks to your left hand.)

The fat section of the tie is now looped around the thin part. Raise the loop up closer to your neck, about the third button of your shirt before proceeding. Be sure you don’t have any twists in your loop as you want your tie to hang straight.

Over and Under

When you’re ready, take the bottom of the fat side of the tie and bring it up to your neck staying under the thin side (which is still being pulled straight down.) The ugly side of the tie should be facing up on the fat side as you carefully bring it up your neck and over the top of the rest of the tie there.

As you do this, the pretty side will be again facing out and the fat side should now be hanging flat over the thin piece.

You now carefully thread the fat side through the knot that has been created around the thin strand. Be careful not to twist the fat strand as you want the knot to look clean when you’re finished. Thread it through and smooth out the fat portion of tie before sliding the knot up to the base of your throat.

Check Your Tie Progress

Look down. It’s extremely likely that on the first pass, the thin part of the tie is hanging longer than the fat side, which should be proudly on display. If this is the case, you might be able to adjust the knot a bit to rearrange length, but your best bet is to simply start over pulling out much more tie on the right side when you get started so you have more to play with as you make a loop.

Easy Step By Step

  1. 1. Hang tie around you neck with the fat side on the right.
  2. 2. Pull out extra length on the right side and then pass it over the thinner portion of the tie which is still hanging straight.
  3. 3. Bring the fat part behind the thin part to create a loop.
  4. 4. Pass the end of the tie up and over the band around you neck.
  5. 5. Thread the fat end through the knot and tighten.

Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions

Your tie should cover all the buttons on your shirt and ideally come to brush the top of your belt buckle. If you are taller than average, you might be able to achieve the correct length more easily by buying long lengths in your ties.
