How to Find the Perfect Jeans
July 17, 2009 by Rebecca
Filed under Fashion & Personal Care
If you’re looking for the kind of jeans that are flattering, functional and fashionable, you need to head to where jeans are a way of life. Stores that sell Hollister clothing or American Eagle clothing specialize in denim and various shirts, sweatshirts and sweaters. This classic style is fundamentally about comfort, and buying jeans from a store that seems to specialize in them can’t be a bad idea.
Talk to a Salesperson
In a store that specializes in denim, you’ll find multiple cuts and colors. The salespeople in the store are often specially trained in the styles of denim, so rather than braving a wall of blue alone, speak to someone knowledgeable about what it is you’re looking at. The right salesperson can be critical to finding the perfect pair of jeans.
Go Shopping on a Weekday
Rather than going to the store on the weekend when there are more customers and less knowledgeable sales staff, go one evening after work or during a long lunch break. You’ll likely be working with the manager and one of the most seasoned employees. There will also be far fewer customers letting you have all of the attention while they run for different sizes and cuts for you to try on.
Try Every Pair of Jeans Available
You never know what will fit if you don’t try it on. Grab every pair of jeans in the store in two sizes – the one you think you are and one size larger. Jeans often run small. Try on everything and when you find a cut you like, put it in one pile. The rejects go into a second pile.
Search for Shades of Denim
Once you have the right cut, start searching for the right shade of denim. Darker shades are slimming and more classic while lighter shades are much more casual. If you plan to wear heels with jeans, opt for a darker wash. Flats and sandals go with lighter washes of denim.
Try on the Final Pair
Try on the exact pair of jeans you’re thinking of buying to be sure they fit correctly. Every pair of jeans is cut just a bit differently. Trying them on ensures they still fit correctly and are long enough – there can be as much as an inch of variance in the length of jeans thanks to the cutting process.
Buy the Perfect Pair of Jeans
Finally, when you’re certain you have a pair of flattering jeans that are stylish and comfortable, buy them. If the jeans aren’t particularly cost prohibitive, buy two pairs.
Easy Step By Step Instructions
- Shop on a weekday for the best assistance
- Speak with a knowledgeable sales person
- Try on all the styles of jeans available
- Search for shades of denim
- Try on your final selection
- Buy the jeans you love
Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions
If you’re between sizes, buy the larger size in jeans. The denim will almost certainly shrink a bit in the wash and a larger size will help you stay comfortable in jeans that have shrunken just a bit.
How to Buy Clothes for College

If you’re ready to head off for higher learning, you might need to revamp your wardrobe a bit. Shopping for an experience you haven’t tried yet can be daunting, but buying a few basics now and saving some of your fashion budget for must-haves down the road is a clever way to be sure what you have fits in with everyone else.
Buy Comfortable Pieces
Life on a college campus includes walking outside most often between classes, strolling the grounds with friends, sitting for hours at a time and then walking back to your dorm or car. All that walking and sitting means you’ll want to find pieces that are functional, comfortable and stylish.
While you’ll see some students in pajamas and other sleepwear, you would do better to try more affordable yet comfortable options from options such as H&M Clothing or Zara clothing. Look for shorts and pants that are loose enough to move in easily, but that are still flattering. Buying shirts that are comfortable is just as important as buying basic shirts that you can throw on and walk out the door to class.
Buy Layering Pieces
In the fall and spring especially, you’ll be walking to class in the heat only to find yourself sitting in a freezing classroom. One or two of your most basic pieces should be hoodies, sweatshirts or a sweater to throw on over your tank or tee. Keep it in your bag or tie it around your waist while you walk and pull it on when you sit down ready to do some learning. Look for warm, yet light pieces to avoid extra bulk.
Buy Walking Shoes
Flip-flops and mules might be adorable, but if you’re hoofing it from one corner of campus to another in fifteen minutes, you’ll want something a bit sturdier underfoot. Look for shoes that you feel fit your style but that are also supportive and won’t let you arrive at class with blisters and dirty feet from the dust outside.
Buy Fun Pieces
A lot of the fun of college life is heading out on the weekends to dance or visit parties. You’ll want to buy pieces that are fun to wear, but consider the tone of the college you’re attending and the city you’ll be living in. New York colleges will likely have a different sort of evening wear than ones in tiny rural cities. Always opt for basics you can mix and match and go for things that are easily washed in a dorm washing machine. There are rumors of beer and other easily spilled beverages at college parties.
Easy Step By Step Instructions
- Put some money aside to buy clothes on campus – you’ll want logo and college wear anyhow
- Buy comfortable, functional pieces – loose and easy are your motto here
- Buy layering pieces such as hoodies and sweatshirts for cool classrooms
- Buy walking shoes to replace flimsy shoes you might have worn inside a school building
- Buy fun pieces to wear on the weekends or to parties
Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions
Bring the basics the first few months of college and when you head home for Thanksgiving or a long weekend, grab more of the clothes that suit your new college style. This keeps your closet from becoming cluttered.
How to Develop a Classical Fashion Style
July 17, 2009 by Rebecca

There often comes a time that you realize the trendiest items simply aren’t well suited to your body shape or your position in life. It is about this time that you begin to realize the value of a classic wardrobe. Developing a classic wardrobe takes time and should never be rushed.
Determine Your Version of Classic Style
Classic style doesn’t have to be boring beiges. Take a look at Banana Republic clothing or Abercrombie and Fitch clothing to see just how elemental style can be, but with stylish elements as well. A well fitted pair of pants with a classic shirt can be easily dressed up with accessories that are a bit more colorful. That same white shirt can be worn over a brightly colored tank and the pants look great dressed up or dressed down. Flip through catalogs and websites until you find the style of clothing you’re comfortable with.
Work Slowly
Building a classic wardrobe means finding pieces that will be classics. This doesn’t happen in a single shopping trip. Start by finding outfits you enjoy and possibly a few variations on that top and bottom piece. If you find a new outfit every time you shop, your pieces should begin to blend together if you’re buying the same basic style each time and the same level of quality.
Classical Quality
Classical pieces should be made with higher quality items than trendy items. In fact, buy cheap trendy pieces to supplement your more expensive items if you’d like, but splurge on quality fabrics and a great cut. After all, you should be wearing these items for years to come.
Fit Matters in Classic Style
The fit of your clothing is one of the most critical elements to a classic style. Be sure your clothing fits the largest part of your body well and then have the pieces altered to fit the rest of you correctly as well. Altering a pair of pants can be as little as $5 – not much on a fashion basic you’ll be wearing for a decade or more.
Easy Step By Step Instructions
- Determine what sorts of classical styles you enjoy
- Work slowly to build up a wardrobe one outfit at a time
- Look for high-quality items that can last for decades.
- Fit your clothing well and use alterations to ensure the perfect draping
Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions
Classical clothing is not tight. If your clothing feels tight or is pulling, go up one size. Size doesn’t matter when building a fashionable wardrobe – fit does.
How to Find Fashion on a Budget
July 17, 2009 by Rebecca

When money is tight, it can be harder to justify large shopping trips. Fortunately, there are ways to find your Gap or Express clothing for less than you might imagine. Finding fashion on a budget is actually rather simple with the amount of online clothing store tips available on the internet.
Shop Sales
When you’re out and about and see a sales rack, always browse through it. You might be surprised to discover what’s hiding on the rack. This is especially true of stores that sell off the pieces for larger companies at a discount. Another great thing about sales is there is always one going on. With the economy down, fashion stores are working harder than ever to bring in customers. For many this means offering mark-downs galore.
Browse Online Clearance
If looking through racks of discounted merchandise isn’t doing much for you fashion-wise, you can look through the very organized racks of online clearance goods at the websites for your favorite stores. Most fashion stores have an online component. Look for clearance and other online sales and you can easily sort by size or style to find great things quickly.
Print Coupons
Look for coupons online for your favorite fashion stores. Most coupons you’d get in the mail are also available online. Simply print the 20% off coupon and head into the store for a nice savings on things you’d otherwise pay full-price for.
Use Price Adjustments
Most clothing items don’t stay full-price for long. If you happen to see an item you just bought went on sale after you paid for it, bring in your receipt and ask for a price adjustment. Unless it is a clearance item, you can probably do this for a week or two after your purchase date if you have your receipt.
Shop Auctions
There are professional discount shoppers who find terrific bargains and then turn those around and sell them online to make a bit of a profit. To you that means you get your new jeans for less without having to do more than click the “Buy Now” button.
Easy Step By Step Instructions
- Shop sales both online and off
- Print off coupons every time you shop to find additional discounts
- Take advantage of price adjustments
- Shop auction websites for deals and steals
Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions
When finding fashionable items for less, always inspect the clothing carefully to be sure that it isn’t damaged or poorly pieced together.
How to Find the Best Way to Get to the United Kingdom
The United Kingdom is one of the best Europe trips to take. The UK has a rich history and culture and is an excellent place to visit. Getting to the island nation is far easier than you might imagine. Currently there are three ways to travel to the UK.
The Eurotunnel
If you are in France, you can take the Eurotunnel to the United Kingdom. To use the Eurotunnel, you reserve a spot for your car in advance. Check in up to two hours before your scheduled departure with a full car of passengers and luggage. Then, once your passports and other documentation has been checked, you’ll drive into an air conditioned carriage that you and your vehicle ride in all the way to the UK.
The ride through the Eurotunnel takes thirty-five minutes and there is shopping, fuel and refreshments on both sides of the tunnel. Tickets to ride on the train through the tunnel are comparable to business airline tickets, but as you pay for only one fare for a carload of people and equipment, the cost is more reasonable than flying.
Ferries
There are also ferries leaving France to travel to the UK on a regular basis. These ferries have various docks along the coast of France, but most travel from Calais, must the same as the Eurotunnel. Many of the ferries now operating can make the journey between France and England in less time than a few years ago thanks to newer, larger ships, but travel on the ferries takes approximately ninety minutes. A ferry trip is the least expensive means to travel to the UK, however.
Airlines
If you are traveling from any location but France, the only way to reach the UK, short of a very long boat ride, is by plane. When you fly to the UK, you will not have your own car, but that most likely will not be an issue. If you’re staying in a major city, or even a small town, a taxi and public transportation can provide all of the transportation you need. If you want freedom to travel the countryside, a rental car is easily available provided you know how to drive on British roadways.
Airline tickets to the UK are available online through airline websites. There are often specials on flights to the United Kingdom, so you should spend a bit of time looking for the best flight arrangements and playing with the time and dates of your travel to see if you can land a lower fare. Tickets to the UK are not cheap, but considering your alternatives, for most tourists, flying is most likely the best way to travel to the UK.
How To Buy Ballroom Dance Shoes

Buying the right Latin shoes can be tricky. There are so many different types to choose from and different shoes for different levels. There are a few guidelines that will help any one who is interested in buying dancing shoes. Buying the right shoe makes a huge difference in how you dance. It is amazing what the right shoe can do for you. Here are a few steps to help in purchasing Latin shoes.
- If you are a beginning dancer buy a shoe that has a lot of support. NEVER buy shoes with a heel higher than two inches. This changes where your center is and unless you are skilled this will ruin your center and balance.
- Don’t buy an expensive pair at first. When you are learning, it doesn’t really matter what brand of shoe you have.
- When fitting for ballroom shoes make sure they are a little snug. They stretch out and you want your big toe to be at the very edge of the shoe or slightly over.
- When you improve and are ready for the skinnier/higher heal the type of shoe you get is very important.
- It is important to get a shoe that is more flexible because you are doing more difficult steps.
Here are some brands that I feel are high quality shoes that look great.
Supadance is one of the top brands. They are based out of England are a little more expensive. There are local vendors but it is cheaper to buy directly from them and pay the shipping costs. These shoes are very flexible but they wear out very fast so expect to buy them often.
International Shoes is another great brand. Their shoes are a little stiffer than Supadance but they last longer. They have more support as well. Ray Rose shoes are great. They are the most flexible of all the brands and they have a great feel and support. This is my favorite brand. There are many other brands but those are the top three that I have tried.
HOW TO BUY STANDARD SHOES
Buying standard shoes is different than buying Latin shoes. Latin shoes have an open toe and standard shoes are closed toe. This is very important in how you dance each dance. You can’t have the same shoes for both styles. There aren’t as many tips for standard shoes as there are for Latin shoes because you don’t need as much flexibility as with Latin.
There are a few things to be aware of how ever.
- When purchasing standard shoes always get them so the fit tight. They will stretch out.
- They now offer shoes with buckles. These are great because the shoes in the past could fall off. I recommend this type of shoe.
- Get shoes with the flare heal. This adds balance and it looks more professional.
- Never buy and open toe shoe. Standard shoes have to be closed toe.
- The brand that I loved the most was Supadance. I tried other brands but they didn’t come close in the way they look and feel. I would only buy Supadance standard shoes.
How to Become a Mystery Shopper

Retail establishments count mystery shopping to visit their locations and give feedback on service, aesthetics and merchandise. A mystery shopper is a spy, in a sense. If you become a mystery shopper, you’ll be given instructions to visit a certain store or restaurant, possibly at a certain time, buy something general or specific, and then that item will be reimbursed plus you’ll be paid for your efforts.
The job of mystery shopping isn’t the shopping – it’s filling out the paperwork after the shopping trip. You must be detailed and exact to help the establishment know what they are doing right and what areas need to be improved.
Becoming a Mystery Shopper
The easiest way to become a mystery shopper is by working with a contact that is already in a mystery shopping position for a company. If none of your friends work as a mystery shoppers, you can get your foot in the door through a variety of online applications.
To become a successful mystery shopper, you must first sign on to a company that provides the service. You can also market your mystery shopping services on a contract basis, but you must have industry resources to find stores in need of your service as well as be able to provide the standard forms and information.
To sign on with a company offering the mystery shopping services, you must first find a legitimate mystery shopping company accepting applications. There are generally more applicants than there are positions in mystery shopping, so you must find a way to stand out in your application. Like any sort of business, once you’ve been assigned a shopping gig or two, you’ll be more desirable if you do a good job.
To find a legitimate company, immediately eliminate any that require you to pay a fee or buy a start-up package. Research companies in the Better Business Bureau and see if any negative feedback pops up online when you search for information NOT from the company website. You can also check to see if prospective companies are members of the Mystery Shopping Providers Association.
Then, when you have a short list of legitimate companies, begin filling out the applications. As many have the same style of questions, save your responses in a word processing application to avoid having to retype each answer multiple times. Use time and care completing the application as it will likely be one among hundreds and you want to stand out in a positive way.
Follow up after applying and call to be sure it was received a few days later if a phone number is available. Once you land a position, do a great job every time and your reputation and future jobs will grow.
How to Dress for an Interview
July 21, 2008 by admin
Landing an interview is exciting. Unfortunately, the hard work you put into applications and cover letters is now behind you and you must wow your potential boss with your smooth talking and appearance.
Dressing for an interview is just as critical as what you say during the meeting. If you arrive looking sloppy or unprofessional, the interviewer will be getting a clear message that the interview simply doesn’t matter to you. No matter what your personal comfort level with professional attire may be, be sure you know how to dress for an interview.
Professional Dress
Once you’ve landed an interview for a job or career in a professional environment, you must show up looking the part. Even if the office is casual, you are not yet part of the office staff, so you must dress on par with management or even above management.
This means you should be wearing a suit, complete with suitable accessories such as panty hose for ladies or neckties for gentlemen.
Select a suit that is dark, but not necessarily black. If you don’t have a full business suit, it would be an excellent investment for the future. When you are shopping, be sure to buy a coordinated dress shirt, although white or ivory will always do, and a mens ties in a muted color or scheme. Dress shoes and dark socks complete the attire.
Remove your jacket while driving keep it from getting wrinkled, and be sure your tie is tied correctly and hanging at the right length. It should touch the top of your belt buckle. Tying ties and having it lie correctly can be irksome, so practice a few times before the day of or get help from a friend or family member. Before entering the interview, pull your jacket back on and button the top button. The bottom button should not be fastened.
Ladies have a few additional options for basic attire. They may wear a pants suit or a traditional skirted suit. A classic dress may be acceptable as well, but be careful not to be too casual or even too formal. Jewelry should be kept small and classic and any makeup should be carefully applied and tastefully limited as to not distract from the interview itself.
Ladies should wear professional shoes, meaning no sandals or even open toed shoes. Pumps or classic flats are acceptable, as are boots with a pants suit. Even if you despise them, pantyhose should be worn with dresses or skirts as they are professional and bare legs are not.
How to Make Christmas Table Decorations
July 17, 2008 by admin
The shopping is done, the tree is decorated, the presents are wrapped, but something is still missing. When all your guests gather around the table for the Christmas dinner you have spent hours preparing, what will they see? A bare tabletop? Let’s hope not. With a few simple touches, your dinner table can become a showcase for some beautiful Christmas decorations.
Centerpiece
The centerpiece will be the focal point of your table, at least until Aunt Mary starts telling embarrassing old family stories. While you can purchase a fresh or silk flower arrangement, a sculpture or figurine of some kind, or a potted poinsettia, there are other options that you can assemble yourself on a budget. Try filling a pair of clear glass hurricane lamps with cheap and colorful glass globe Christmas ornaments. You can also use a vase to hold peppermints or small red and green candies. Use the candy to support a classic taper candle or a small group of artificial flowers fitting for the winter season.
Napkin Rings
A great opportunity to add a personal touch to your table is with your napkin rings. Napkin rings can be a pricy investment, or they can be a creative outlet of your holiday spirit. For a basic approach, cut one inch segments from the cardboard tube inside your wrapping paper. You can cover these with the wrapping paper itself, or paint or color the cardboard. Hot glue a small ornament to the top of the napkin ring. Another option is to string festive beads or buttons on a piece of elastic. Whatever you create, your guests will appreciate the time and creativity you invested in this Christmas decoration.
Placecards
For large or small crowds, use placecards to not only help guests find their place at the table, but to showcase your holiday spirit. You can adapt gift tags to be placecards, or glue rectangles of wrapping paper on a stiff backing and write guests’ names on your homemade place card. Another option is to cut a Christmassy shape such as a star or bell out of cardboard and cover it with aluminum foil. A permanent marker will have no problem writing on the surface, making a lovely placecard.
How Hang a Shower Curtain
July 17, 2008 by admin
Shower curtains come in all shapes and sizes, but hanging a shower curtain is almost universal. Of course, if you want to dress up your shower a bit, you can hang your curtain with extra flair, which is simple enough. Here’s how to hang a shower curtain.
Buy the Curtain and Accessories
When begin shopping for a shower curtain, take note of the many styles of hanging accessories. There are simple metal rings, colored plastic rings, decorative glass rings and many more. First select a shower curtain. Then find a set of coordinating curtain rings. You may choose to buy a set of curtain rings that match your bath accessories such as trashcan and soap dispenser, or you can opt for the basic plastic rings in a color that coordinates with the curtain itself.
If you’ve selected a fabric shower curtain, you’ll need to find a liner to protect the fabric from water. A liner is inexpensive and comes in a few different colors of vinyl, however your best bet may be a transparent curtain to let in the most light in the shower. You can easily use the liner as the shower curtain if you’d prefer although it is bathroom décor at it’s simplest. At the end of your shopping trip you should have a liner, a curtain, and one set of curtain rings.
Hang the Curtain
To actually hang the curtain, unfold the vinyl liner and lay the top of the liner underneath the top of the curtain. (You may wish to iron your new shower curtain – follow manufacturer’s instructions.) There are prepunched holes at the top of each piece, align those holes and thread a curtain ring through.
Start with one end or the other to ensure your liner and curtain are aligned properly. Then also check to be sure the outside pattern of the rings, if yours has one, is facing out on the side of the curtain, not the liner. If your rings lock together, don’t lock them yet.
Once you’re treaded all rings into all holes, carefully lift one side of the curtain up to the bar above your bathtub. Again start on one side to avoid miscalculations. Fit the ring over the bar and lock it into place. Repeat with all of the rings. Your curtain is now hung.
For extra variety, purchase a second bar to go over the tub. Hang the liner separately on the standard metal bar. Then place your new bar slightly higher than the original. Hang your decorative shower curtain with rings on this bar. Now you can open each curtain individually to let in more light as needed.
