How to Buy a Business

business buyingIf you’re ready to jump into working for yourself and would rather start at the upper end of the process than building up your own, understanding the market for businesses is essential.

Generate a Business Plan

Buying a business can be hugely lucrative. However, if you buy the wrong kind of business, you’ll be suffering in the long-term. A small day spa might be doing a wonderful business and be a wise investment. However, if you don’t know the first thing about manicures and facials, perhaps the spa isn’t in your best interest. Granted, you can always resell for a profit if you’re getting a good deal or find a suitable manager, but the typical business owner at least enjoys what he does. Develop a plan for the sorts of businesses you’re interested in.

Look for New Business Funding

If you’ve gotten a large inheritance or have been saving for years, you are set for funding, but many business owners, even those with funds of their own, still seek out alternative funding. Look first at government grants. There are numerous grants available for certain kinds of businesses and based on socioeconomic factors, you might be able to use government funds to buy and maintain the business. Banks and other investors might also be willing to front the funds, but you’ll need to have quite a bit invested in the business as well to be considered a good risk for investors.

Find a Business Broker

Using a business broker is a good idea no matter how small a business you’re considering. A broker is akin to a real estate agent. The broker handles the paperwork and legalities of the business sale protecting your interests in exchange for a fee and/or percentage of the sale price. When investing $50,000 or more, it only makes sense to have someone at least look over the contracts and paperwork for you. Brokers tend to work in geographical regions as well. A Raleigh business broker would be the person to speak to about local businesses there and a Omaha broker would specialize in businesses in his area. It’s best to use a local broker for each transaction you’re planning.

Easy Step By Step Instructions For Buying a Business
  • Brainstorm and plan accordingly to determine what sort of action you should take on business ownership
  • Research and locate funding sources for an investment in a new business
  • Use a business broker to handle the details of the transaction to ensure you’re protected throughout the process
Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions When Buying a Business

Many business sales, like home sales are negotiable. A powerful broker can help you bring down the price a bit or negotiate more favorable buying terms.

How to Build Link Popularity Naturally

July 23, 2008 by admin

how to build link popularityThere is a huge market for links in the webmaster community, but true link popularity can’t be bought. Incoming links can be purchased, but those must mix with authentic links from quality websites to give your website true link popularity.

Link Popularity

You are likely wondering, what is link popularity? The answer is simple enough. Link popularity is a measure of how popular and purposeful your website is based on the number of other quality websites that link to it. The more websites that include a link to your site, the better your site looks.

Incoming links are a sign that your website has something to say and is worth visiting. The more reputable the other websites are that link to yours the more important your site looks in search engines. Link popularity is just one of many factors that the major search engines consider when placing websites in their servers and on search result pages.

Build Link Popularity

There are many ways to build link popularity, but many webmasters try and skip the more authentic means and buy links instead. Paid links are frowned upon by major search engines, so it is far better to generate authentic links rather than buying one. You can use the following methods to build your own link popularity.

Submit your Website to Directories

By submitting your website to popular and well respected directories, you’ll automatically be gaining links back to your pages.

Use Article Marketing

Article marketing consists of writing articles for article directories or other sites and including a link back to your site as part of the article. As the articles are picked up on other websites, your link spread throughout the internet community. A solid article marketing campaign with quality articles likely to interest others in your niche can generate hundreds of links.

Use a Press Release

When you have something major to report, a press release will announce your event to the world via distribution and media outlets. As other websites pick up the news covered in your report, your link, which is naturally included in the release, is spread across the internet.

Build Your Own Popularity

Spend some time getting to know others in your webmaster community. If you know many other people and they know you and your site, it will grow naturally by word of mouth.

Participate in Forums

Webmaster and niche forums are an excellent place to advertise your website. Throw a link in your signature and you might gain a link from the site if it is not designated “no follow,” but other forum members will see your signature and visit your site hopefully earning you a natural link form their sites.

Promote You Site

Internet marketing is all about marketing. The more people you have visiting your website on a daily basis, the more people are likely to bookmark or link to your site from other places. Promote your site in as many ways as you can to get your name out there and start getting traffic. With a consistent campaign, traffic will grow and so will your link popularity.

How to Set Up an Outdoor Living Area

July 21, 2008 by admin

how to set up an outdoor living areaThe patio or deck can be a natural extension of your home if you like to spend time outside. You can make the most of this outdoor living by creating a full outside living area. The degree of complexity is a personal decision, but a well designed outdoor living area will receive plenty of use.

Set Up Location

The first step in an outdoor living area is finding the right location for your seating. You may already have a large covered patio or gazebo. You may find that you’d like to lay a new section of patio or build a deck to accommodate your new outdoor living area. Arrange your location before moving ahead.

Set Up Seating

Once a location has been determined, preferably near the rest of the home, it is time purchase and arrange comfortable seating. Seating can be as simple as a patio table and chairs or it can be a collection of chairs, chaise lounges, benches, swings and cushions. The style of the seating as well as the number of seats is up to you.

Arrange the seating in a circular fashion for large groups, or in small clusters to encourage more intimate conversations. If you will be using an outdoor fireplace, be sure to place seating well away from the center where the fireplace will be located.

Set Up a Focus

If you would like a focus for your outdoor living area, arrange an outdoor fireplace, a table or other large item in the center of your seating to help bring the living area together. A table may limit seats, so you might create a small living area or multiple clusters if using a table. A large fire pit or fireplace can accommodate many seats, but be sure to keep seats well away from any blaze or sparks.

Accessorize

Finally, dress up your outdoor living area with potted plants, lawn decorations and special touches such as urns or wall fountains. Arrange plants and other accessories around the perimeter of the seating arrangement to make the outdoor living area feel cozy and contained.

How to Set Stepping Stones

July 21, 2008 by admin

how to set stepping stonesStepping stones can make a perfect path through a backyard or garden. They can also take the place of unattractive concrete sidewalks and add a decorative element to a yard. Here’s how to set stepping stones.

Determine Your Stepping Stone Location

Your first task is to determine where the stepping stones should be located. Look for worn areas of your yard or pathways that you’ve already worn into the ground. Also consider stepping stones in boggy areas of the yard.

Measure

To measure the placement of the stepping stones, walk the pathway normally. Stepping stones should be set at the distance of a natural step, so drop a pebble, spray a bit of paint or use another means of marking the ground when you take a step. Then count up the number of stones you need.

Purchase Your Stepping Stones

Purchase stepping stones that suit your outdoor space and budget. Decorative stepping stones are beautiful and make a fun path, but basic concrete stepping stones may be easier on the budget.

Place the Stepping Stones

Dig a shallow hole slightly wider than the stone and not quite as deep. Layer the bottom of the hole with sand about ¼ of an inch thick. For tougher soils, such as clay, consider using additional sand. Place the stone into the hole and stand on it to set it in place. Wiggle around a bit and bounce to ensure it is firmly set. When it is completely set, pack the dirt back around the stone to set it in place. Complete the procedure with the remaining stones to create an entire stepping stone path.

How to Make Your Own Compost

July 21, 2008 by admin

how to make compostCompost is nature’s finest fertilizer and you can start your own compost pile easily in the backyard. By making your own compost, you’ll be taking care of your plants while properly disposing of household and backyard waste. If you’re ready to start your own compost pile and need composting tips, here’s enough to get you started.

Make a Compost Area

You must make your compost in a certain area, so section off a plot of land that is three feet square. You can make your compost heap larger, but smaller may prove tricky. Build a simple box if you’d like or you can purchase a compost box from your neighborhood gardening center.

Give Compost a Good Start

The best way to start a compost pile is by using someone else’s compost. Look for compost donations from neighbors or friends and make a small pile. You can also buy compost if you’d like. Make a small pile with your new compost and then you’re ready to start adding your own ingredients.

Adding Compost

Adding to the compost pile is simple. You’ll want to add twenty brown items for every green. The green items, such as fresh leaves, are wetter than dead, or brown, leaves. You’ll want to limit the amount of wet on your pile. Add a variety of items to your compost pile to avoid burying it with too many leaves and their carbon or making your compost too acidic with pine needles.

You can add both of those things in large amounts, but be sure your amounts are balanced. You can also add fresh manure from pets in the yard, but you would do well to let the manure age first as it may burn plants if used too soon as it is so rich while fresh. Go ahead and add household trash as well including shredded paper, eggshells, and food remains from plants, but not meats or fats.

Using Compost

Soon your compost pile will be a beautiful collection of leaves, pine needles, weeds, grass clippings, orange peels, old vegetables and more. Stir it once and a while to let it oxygenate, and then pull the richest compost from the bottom and middle to use on your garden and plants. Your plants will be thriving in no time.

How to Secure Your Home on a Budget

July 18, 2008 by admin

how to secure your home on a budgetHome security systems can be expensive. If you are working on a tight budget, but would like to be sure your home is as secure as possible without expensive alarms and cameras, you can. Here’s how to secure your home on a budget.

Secure Your Locks

The least expensive way to secure your property is to be sure the locks that are supposed to be keeping people out are up to par. Check all of your locks to be sure none are broken, and then invest in new locks for the front and back door. If you have a sliding door, be sure you have a bar to prevent the door from sliding open without your permission should the lock be jimmied.

Backdoors are often less secure than front, and most intruders know this. Purchase a chain, deadbolt, or combination of locks for the backdoor as well as the front. This is your first measure of defense, and you want it to be a good one. Check your window locks and see about installing additional locks on these as well.

Set Up Surveillance

Notable cameras are off-putting to intruders as they don’t want their actions recorded. Fake security cameras are inexpensive and may provide an excellent deterrent. If you’d rather have the real thing, but can’t afford a full-blown security system, a simple webcam or nanny cam hooked up through your computer can record short bursts of activity for you to monitor while you’re away or at the end of the day. Just be sure you set up the camera in a location where it can “see” as much as possible.

Install Lights

A motion activated floodlight in the backyard or along the driveway is another good deterrent to intruders. Someone sneaking up in the dark would suddenly become flooded with light making it hard to act nonchalant. Of course, the neighbor’s cat would also become flooded with light, so consider your wattage and sensitivity when installing these.

Decorative lights that illuminate the yard in both the front and the back can also provide a measure of security by eliminating the darkness that makes it easy for intruders to sneak through. These lights are also attractive, so you’d be killing two birds with one stone.

Be Vigilant

Once you have your locks, lights and cameras in place, you must be vigilant about maintaining them. Don’t get lazy and forget to lock up at night or sleep with a window open if you’re on the first floor. Locks and lights are terrific at helping to keep intruders out, but you must utilize the systems properly for them to work correctly. Be vigilant and be your home’s best protector.

How to Grow a Window Herb Garden

July 18, 2008 by admin

how to grown a window herb gardenFresh herbs in the kitchen can add a great deal of flavor to food as well as a pleasing aroma and appearance to the room itself. Growing herbs in a window not only saves on space in the kitchen, it also allows the small plants to thrive in the sunlight. A window herb garden is perfect for cooks who enjoy growing and using their own herbs.

Prepare the Window

To grow herbs in your window, you must find a space that has plenty of light. A window with a southern exposure will receive plenty of even light throughout the day while a window on the east or west of the home will only get quality sunlight as the sun rises or sets. Windows on the northern side of the home may not get direct sunlight at all.

Your window should have a wide base, or you may consider installing a window box in an existing window frame to give yourself extra room for growing plants and herbs. Even a standard window sill will be wide enough for a small herb garden, however. Remove any other items from the sill and protect the wood with a plastic tray or piece of cloth to attract drips or spills from water.

Purchase Herbs

As you will be growing your herbs inside, you can buy seeds or seedlings, but be sure to plan on small plants. Window herb gardens can be nicely arranged using a series of small pots or even tin cans, or you can opt for a more elaborate set up with a connected series of pots or growing areas. Be sure to have holes for drainage, but also containers to catch that drainage.

Allow time for your herbs to grow before trimming or use. If you purchased mature plants, you need only allow for the plant to settle after being transferred to a new container. Plants grown from seed will obviously take much longer to grow.

Water and Prune Your Herbs

As your herbs grow in your window herb garden, water them slightly on a regular basis, but don’t overwater. Check to be sure your plants are thriving in their current condition and location. If your herbs are struggling feel the soil to be sure it is damp, not soaking after you water and try moving your plants to a window with a different sun pattern.

Prune your herbs back to encourage full growth. Use the pruned pieces in your cooking and soon your meals will have an extra flair and so will your kitchen as you enjoy your window herb garden.

How to Maximize Space in Your Closet

July 17, 2008 by admin

how to make the most of space in a closetClosets fill up fast. When your closet is full to bursting, but you still need more room, you need to take a step back and see about organizing your closet to maximize space. Here’s how to find more space in your current closet.

Clean Out Clothes

Start with the number one item in your closet – your clothing. Take everything off the shelves and rods and analyze each piece before you put it back. Only put items back on the shelves or rods if you wear it currently, have worn it in the last six months, or have just purchased it.

Any clothing you’re hoping to wear again, used to wear and still have, are too big, stained, torn, pilled, or otherwise in ill repair need to go. If you have a sentimental attachment to a pair of jeans or a dress, keep them, but limit this to one or two items – not your entire junior high wardrobe. If you lose weight in a month, you can treat yourself to a new wardrobe.

If you have a legitimate reason for two separate wardrobes such as a recent baby or extreme seasonal temperatures, remove the items you don’t fit into or can’t wear now and store them in a tote in the garage or attic. You can retrieve them when the weather changes or you lose that last ten pounds.

Clean Out Shoes and Accessories

While you’re at it, sort through your shoes and other accessories, too. If you haven’t worn a pair, no matter how cute they are, give them away to a friend or donate them to someone who needs them. You can do the same with purses, bags, and other space hogs.

Store the Bulky Stuff

If you have a wedding dress and heavy winter coat in your closet taking up half of the useable space, store them somewhere else. Perhaps stuff your coat into the hall closet, and consider hanging the wedding dress in a protective bag in the attic. Blankets, pillows and other soft items can be stored in space bags and then placed under the bed. This is also true of off season clothes.

Invest in a Closet System

Invest in a closet system if you don’t already have a system of shelves and drawers. A closet system will let you organize your things into their own spaces which helps reduce clutter and keeps all items in their most accessible location.

How to Make Christmas Table Decorations

July 17, 2008 by admin

how to decorate a table for xmasThe shopping is done, the tree is decorated, the presents are wrapped, but something is still missing. When all your guests gather around the table for the Christmas dinner you have spent hours preparing, what will they see? A bare tabletop? Let’s hope not. With a few simple touches, your dinner table can become a showcase for some beautiful Christmas decorations.

Centerpiece

The centerpiece will be the focal point of your table, at least until Aunt Mary starts telling embarrassing old family stories. While you can purchase a fresh or silk flower arrangement, a sculpture or figurine of some kind, or a potted poinsettia, there are other options that you can assemble yourself on a budget. Try filling a pair of clear glass hurricane lamps with cheap and colorful glass globe Christmas ornaments. You can also use a vase to hold peppermints or small red and green candies. Use the candy to support a classic taper candle or a small group of artificial flowers fitting for the winter season.

Napkin Rings

A great opportunity to add a personal touch to your table is with your napkin rings. Napkin rings can be a pricy investment, or they can be a creative outlet of your holiday spirit. For a basic approach, cut one inch segments from the cardboard tube inside your wrapping paper. You can cover these with the wrapping paper itself, or paint or color the cardboard. Hot glue a small ornament to the top of the napkin ring. Another option is to string festive beads or buttons on a piece of elastic. Whatever you create, your guests will appreciate the time and creativity you invested in this Christmas decoration.

Placecards

For large or small crowds, use placecards to not only help guests find their place at the table, but to showcase your holiday spirit. You can adapt gift tags to be placecards, or glue rectangles of wrapping paper on a stiff backing and write guests’ names on your homemade place card. Another option is to cut a Christmassy shape such as a star or bell out of cardboard and cover it with aluminum foil. A permanent marker will have no problem writing on the surface, making a lovely placecard.

How Hang a Shower Curtain

July 17, 2008 by admin

how to hang shower curtainsShower curtains come in all shapes and sizes, but hanging a shower curtain is almost universal. Of course, if you want to dress up your shower a bit, you can hang your curtain with extra flair, which is simple enough. Here’s how to hang a shower curtain.

Buy the Curtain and Accessories

When begin shopping for a shower curtain, take note of the many styles of hanging accessories. There are simple metal rings, colored plastic rings, decorative glass rings and many more. First select a shower curtain. Then find a set of coordinating curtain rings. You may choose to buy a set of curtain rings that match your bath accessories such as trashcan and soap dispenser, or you can opt for the basic plastic rings in a color that coordinates with the curtain itself.

If you’ve selected a fabric shower curtain, you’ll need to find a liner to protect the fabric from water. A liner is inexpensive and comes in a few different colors of vinyl, however your best bet may be a transparent curtain to let in the most light in the shower. You can easily use the liner as the shower curtain if you’d prefer although it is bathroom décor at it’s simplest. At the end of your shopping trip you should have a liner, a curtain, and one set of curtain rings.

Hang the Curtain

To actually hang the curtain, unfold the vinyl liner and lay the top of the liner underneath the top of the curtain. (You may wish to iron your new shower curtain – follow manufacturer’s instructions.) There are prepunched holes at the top of each piece, align those holes and thread a curtain ring through.

Start with one end or the other to ensure your liner and curtain are aligned properly. Then also check to be sure the outside pattern of the rings, if yours has one, is facing out on the side of the curtain, not the liner. If your rings lock together, don’t lock them yet.

Once you’re treaded all rings into all holes, carefully lift one side of the curtain up to the bar above your bathtub. Again start on one side to avoid miscalculations. Fit the ring over the bar and lock it into place. Repeat with all of the rings. Your curtain is now hung.

For extra variety, purchase a second bar to go over the tub. Hang the liner separately on the standard metal bar. Then place your new bar slightly higher than the original. Hang your decorative shower curtain with rings on this bar. Now you can open each curtain individually to let in more light as needed.
