Setting a table properly involves much more than a fork, spoon, knife and plate. A formal table setting is complex with up to sixteen or twenty different items per setting. There are two basics rules to follow with much technique to follow depending on arrangements and the actual food items to be served.
Basic Rules of Table Settings

The first rule to remember is that utensils are placed in the order they will be used. This means you set a table from the outside in. Also, forks will always be placed on the left and spoons and knives are placed on the right.
The Basic Table Setting

The basic table setting is much like the word FORKS. You place the fork on the far left side followed the O-like plate. Ignore the R, and then place the knife for K and the spoon for S. The knife should be facing in toward the plate. Make circles using your thumb and forefinger. On your left is a “b” This is to remind you that the bread and butter plate goes on your left. Your right hand forms a “d” to remind you that the drink is placed at the upper left. Napkins are placed on the left of the plate or on the plate itself.

The Traditional Formal Table Setting

The formal table setting has the same bones as the basic with FORKS helping you place items in the correct area. The formal table setting includes more items however. Place the dinner plate in the center, in the same “O” space as before. On the left of the plate, you’ll now place two forks. The dinner fork is largest and goes next to the plate with a smaller salad fork just outside the dinner fork. Additional forks would be placed outside the salad fork in the reverse order they would be used based on courses.

To the right of the plate you’ll find the dinner knife (blade in), then spoons in the reverse order of courses. The dessert spoon will be next to the knife with a soup spoon on the outside right of the arrangement. Above the spoons and knife, you’ll arrange any drinking glasses.

A salad plate is placed at the far outer left of the setting outside the forks and is used if salad is not to be eaten with the meal or if the main course contains gravy or another runny option. The bread plate is placed above the forks with the butter knife lying diagonally across the plate, blade facing down and handle on the right.

The dessert spoon and fork can be placed diagonally above the plate forming a roof over the plate with the spoon on the right and knife on the left, or they can be placed in the utensil lineup. If they are placed with other forks and spoons, they will be closest to the plate as they are used last.

If coffee is part of the meal, the setting is arranged with the coffee cup and saucer at the upper right of the arrangement – outside the glasses and diagonally above the spoons and knife.

Easy Step By Step

For a basic table setting:

Place the dinner plate in the middle of the setting.

Place the fork on the left side of the plate.

Place the knife on the right side of the plate, blade in.

Position the spoon on the outside of the knife.

Glasses go about the spoons.

The bread plate goes above the forks

The napkin is placed on the plate or on the far left side of the arrangement.

Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions

In addition to place settings, be sure you know other rules of etiquette to host an effective dinner party. This includes the positioning of dirty knives (never on the table) as well as the art of serving. Serve from the left side with the left hand and remove plates with the right. Serve the oldest lady present first. All ladies are served before men in descending age order as well.

Splicing or splitting cable from a paying customer into your home is stealing. We certainly can’t condone anything illegal that might land you in jail, but if you want cable television shows, and you want them for nothing out of pocket, there is still a way. You can watch them on your PC.

Visit TVUnetworks.com to download a special player that plays 3000 cable channels directly on your computer. Open Internet Explorer and navigate to TVUnetworks.com. Watch a few shows to try it out if you’d like, and then click on the Download button to download the free program. You’ll have the choice of location for downloading, and your desktop is likely the best choice as the zipped file will be easiest to find there.

Allow the download process to complete and then double click on the downloaded file. If you have unzipping software, the file should open automatically and show you the contents and instructions. If not, you might need to also download zipping software at CNet.com.

Double click on program file inside the unzipped folder to begin the installation process. During the installation, an icon will be created on your desktop. You can use this to open the television program.

When it is installed, open the cable program and select English as your language to eliminate programs in other languages. Then scroll through the many programs on the right side of your screen to select something that interests you. Many of your favorite channels are available with this program and you can also receive channels from all over the world.

Easy Step By Step

Visit TVUnetworks.com

Download the cable program from the site – the download is free.

Unzip the file and install the software on your computer

Open the program and begin watching your 3000 new cable channels absolutely free!

Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions

Many of your favorite channels are available through TVUnetworks. It’s worth a try, even if you’re already resigned to paying cable for your television. You’ll be able to watch shows at your computer or you can run the picture and sound to the television using appropriate attachments (This varies by television.)

Tying a bow in a girl’s hair is reminiscent of youth and frivolity – not to mention they are so darn cute! The kinds of bows that are popular today for young girls are not the pouf creations of a decade ago. Instead, hair bows are slim and trim.

To make a hair bow, first purchase ribbon from a craft store. You can use any width of ribbon up to about ¾ of an inch, but the number of ribbons you use is determined by the width. The thinner your ribbon, the more strands of color you can get away with.

If the girl will be wearing her hair in a ponytail, the best way to affix the hair bow is to tie it tightly around the elastic holding the ponytail in place. To do this, use a length of ribbon about 12-18 inches long. Wrap the ribbon around the base of the ponytail so that the lose ends are on top. Tie a bow as if you were tying a shoe. Pull the ends out evenly and be sure the bowed parts match. You might need to retie if it didn’t come out evenly.

To do this with multiple ribbons, simply wrap all the strands around the hair in the same way and tie as if all strands were part of a single ribbon.

For hair that’s not in a pigtail, the easiest and most attractive style of bow in current fashion is again, a simple bow like you would use to tie your shoe, but neat and even. Tie a small bow and use a dot of invisible fabric glue on the knot to keep it from pulling out. Thread a bobby pin through the middle of the knot before the glue dries. The bow should sit at the top of the curved portion of the bobby pin.

When it’s time to put the bow in her hair, simply slide the bobby pin in the desired location. The pin will blend with the hair leaving the bow visible. For very young girls, another option would be to tie a bow, seal the knot and then use fabric or hot glue to affix the bow to a small barrette.

Easy Step By Step

Cut a ribbon 12-18” inches.

Pull hair into a high ponytail.

Tie the ribbon around the ponytail and pull the bow and dangling ends evenly.

Or tie a traditional bow separately and glue it to a barrette or bobby pin to affix in hair not in a ponytail.

Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions

The larger you’d like to make a bow, the wider ribbon you should use to give it strength. Otherwise the bow will be droopy or come untied more easily. Large bows can be tied and then glued to larger barrettes. Wrap extra ribbon around the top of the barrette to hide any metal parts you’d prefer not to show.

Kissing is one of the most romantic and intimate acts between two people – kissing on the lips, that is. Kissing on the cheek is not especially romantic as it’s something your grandmother is likely fond of doing. Knowing how to kiss though is more complicated than simply squashing your lips onto someone else’s. Even watching movies with long, drawn out kissing scenes can be upsetting – surely not every kiss is so intense?

Nope. Kissing has a full range of potential from the chaste peck on the lips, to the full-blown erotic French kiss. The most common kiss, especially for a first kiss, has nothing to do with your tongue, so relax and plump up those lips for some prime puckering.

Prime Your Lips

Your first step is to prime your lips and mouth to be at their most kissable. Use chapstick or lip gloss – the non-sticky kind, to keep your lips soft and supple. You’ll want to maintain fresh breath at all times, so keep breath mints or gum very handy. Those pocket patches work very well and are very discreet for breath emergencies.

Set up the Kiss

If you’re ready and willing for that first kiss, do everything in your power to show it – without coming on too strong. Complicated? Maybe. When speaking to your interest, lean in and place your head near his or hers. Touch his or her hand or knee lightly. Smile and keep eye contact while he or she is speaking. When there is a meaningful pause in the conversation, lean in a bit further with your lips soft. Hopefully your partner will read the message and meet your mouth to give you that kiss, but if not you simply smile and ask another question to keep the conversation going. The kiss will happen eventually – stay loose or you’ll be too stressed to enjoy it properly.

Soft Lips

When the kiss finally does happen, lean in to your kissing mate with your mouth barely closed and your lips soft. You can also close your eyes completely or halfway, but staring at him is usually a turn off. When your lips meet, barely press on his, pucker and deliver the kiss. Then pull away gently. If his mouth follows yours or he pulls you closer, you can kiss again a bit more strongly and for a longer period of time if you’d like.

Keep your lips soft and your tongue in your mouth. A first kissing encounter isn’t the time for open mouths and spit swapping. Save that for a more intimate time when you’re both ready for a more serious meeting of the mouths.

Easy Step By Step

Keep your mouth kiss ready with soft lips and fresh breath

Stay approachable and use body language to signal you’re ready for a kiss

When kissing, use soft lips and kiss gently then pull away

If your partner follows you, continue kissing with soft lips for a longer stretch.

Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions

Kissing is just one form of communication in a relationship. Talk about the relationship openly and honestly – especially if you’re ready to take kissing to the next step or hold off on more intimate time together.

Cleaning pennies is a fun game for children. There are two ways to clean pennies – one is the kitchen version and the other is a restaurant version. The restaurant version works best when you need a distraction for your children while waiting on food or drinks.

Mix Your Cleaning Solution

In the kitchen, pour ¼ cup of vinegar into a cup and add 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix the ingredients together until the salt is dissolved. Hold a penny between two fingers and dunk it into the cup. The half that is exposed to the vinegar should come out clean and shiny after a few minutes. The vinegar mixture removes copper oxide, the material that creates the brown color, from the outside of the penny.

Think Outside the Box

While sitting at a restaurant, look around for a bottle of hot sauce – preferably Tabasco sauce. Place the penny on a napkin and carefully drip a few drops onto the top of the penny. Let the bubble of sauce sit for about five minutes before wiping it clean with a napkin. The spot where the sauce was sitting will now be bright and shiny.

Easy Step By Step

Mix a teaspoon of salt into ¼ cup of vinegar

Add pennies and wait a minute

Remove pennies and marvel at their shine

Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions

You can use vinegar in many other ways to impress your children. Clean pennies, dissolve the shell from an egg, turn a chicken bone soft – there are dozens of kid friendly uses for vinegar.

Drawing is more than just a hobby or a way to kill time during a boring lecture. It’s one of the original art forms. If you love cars, it’s only natural to want to draw cars. Fortunately, even the most complex design is simple if you break it down into small enough parts.

To Draw a Car

To draw a car, you must first think about what kind of vehicle you’re actually interested in drawing. A Corvette looks very different than a El Dorado, for example. Decide on the car you like and find a picture online or in a book of that car. To learn to draw cars on your own, you’ll need to practice using another drawing or photograph first.

Don’t Trace

Print off the picture or make a copy of it. Some people might now trace the picture through white paper, but that’s not the same as actually learning to draw cars. Instead of tracing, use a pencil to lightly draw over the main parts of the picture. You’re looking for the major lines, such as the top, front, back, middle and bottom of the vehicle. Practice your pencil stroke by following the actual lines on the picture, and then work to duplicate the lines on your own paper –without tracing.

Do one section at a time and draw only a handful of lines each time. Gradually the lines will start to come together to resemble the car in the picture. If you can find a basic drawing online rather than a photograph, it will be even easier to see what lines you’ve already drawn and which you still need to complete. Some drawing books even have this broken down in images for you to copy, although they are rarely the actual cars you want to draw.
Line by line, complete your picture. Do all your drawing in pencil so that you can go back and erase and change lines slightly as necessary to make it perfect. Then, when the drawing is done, you have the option of coloring it or going back over the pencil with black ink to make it stand out a bit more.

Easy Step By Step

1. Find a drawing or photograph you like and study it in small sections.

2. Mimic the lines of the picture with a pencil on the page, and then on the blank paper.

3. Draw a few lines at a time in small areas.

4. Keep adding lines until your drawing is complete.

Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions

Drawing rarely happens perfectly the first time, so remember to continue to practice over and over again – possibly with the same picture, to gain and improve your skills.

Scarves have been around for centuries, but they never seem to go out of style. A great scarf can keep you warm or be the ultimate accessory when you’re out on the town. There are many types of scarves with different purposes and different looks. All of these can be tied in different ways as well.

Long Narrow Scarf

A long knit, fleece, or wool scarf is generally wrapped around your neck multiple times with each wrap laying loosely on the previous one. Another method or tying a long winter scarf is to fold the scarf in half and then center the folded scarf on your neck. Tie the two ends together in a loose knot and you can tuck the ends into your jacket or let the hang.

Short Narrow Scarf

Simply a shorter version of the long narrow scarf, you can simply wrap the scarf around your neck and tie a loose knot with the two ends, or you can do a European knot. Fold the scarf in half and center it on your neck. Take the loose ends and bring them across your neck. Tuck the two ends through the loop at the fold and pull tight against your neck. You can also simply wrap the scarf around your neck once with the long portion dangling down your back.

Long Silk Scarf

<p->A long silk scarf can be worn much like a knit scarf with a simple knot at the neck and ends flowing, or you can knot the scarf at your neck in the same way you would tie a tie. Tying the scarf like a tie will give you a more structured look, while loose ends are free and more casual.
Square Scarf

The square scarf is very common and can be a beautiful accessory. The most common way to tie a square scarf is to pull the two opposing corners tightly to bring the square into a long, bunched shape. Then tie the scarf around your neck with a simple knot. Small squares might sit directly on the neck with a bit of fluff at the ends where it is tied tightly. Larger squares can be artfully arranged over the chest or shoulder and should be tied loosely to give you plenty of room at the neck.

Easy Step By Step

Long scarf – fold in half and tie in a simple knot around your neck.

Short scarf – fold in half and feed ends back through loop around your neck

Long silk scarf – tie in a simple knot or like a tie

Square Scarf – Pull into a triangle and tie around neck. Arrange ends beautifully.

Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions

The material of your scarf and the look you’re working to achieve will help you determine how you want to tie it. Silk is formal while knit is very casual.

On MySpace, the communities and groups you join are by default shown to all your friends and followers. If you would prefer to keep some things private at least, you can change your settings to hide your groups very easily.

Log into your MySpace Account as you normally would. Look on the Control Panel for Settings and select it.

In the top menu bar, click on Miscellaneous. You’ll see it on the far right.

Inside your profile settings, look for the Groups heading. Under the heading is the phrase, “Display Groups on Profile.” Simply uncheck the check box next to the phrase to unselect that option.

Save your changes.

Once you’ve saved your new preferences, you will have successfully hidden your groups.

Easy Step By Step

Log into your MySpace Account

Select Settings in the Control Panel

Click on Miscellaneous

Uncheck “Display Groups on Profile” under Groups heading

Warnings, Advice, Suggestions

If you’re an avid MySpace user, there is really no reason you’d want your groups available to prying eyes. Everyone can benefit from hiding their groups on Myspace.

The Disney vacation is a dream for most families, or at least the youngest members of the family. There are few places in the world where real magic happens for children, but Walt Disney World in Orlando is definitely one of those places. The only trouble is often the cost of that magic is too steep for parents to bear. Here’s how to plan a Disney vacation on a budget.

Travel Off-season

The first way to save money on a Disney vacation is to travel when nobody else is traveling. Orlando is most popular in the winter with retirees and snowbirds and Spring Break through summer are busy times with families and younger individuals. This means that the best time to travel with a family to Disney is during the winter or fall. Airline tickets will be less expensive during this time and many other venues in Orlando may be offering discounts – including Disney.

Avoid Resorts

Your next step is to book accommodations. Don’t be fooled by even the lowest rate on Disney resorts. The least expensive way to visit Disney for more than a day or two is to book a vacation home in Orlando. Renting a house near the theme parks is surprisingly affordable, but you must often rent for an entire week. That week, however, is still usually less than four or five days at a hotel. Plus, you have a kitchen available which can save you substantially on meal costs. If you don’t plan on spending all of your time at one of the Disney parks, you can also drive to the beach in less than a hour or explore many of Orlando’s other (less expensive) attractions.

Look for Deals

Finally, you need to look for deals on tickets to the park. Avoid third party ticket sellers or discounts unless you know the source is reputable. You don’t want to be suckered into paying for a service you don’t need simply for $10 off a day’s ticket.

Instead, head to the Disney website to check out online ticket sales and see if the park is promoting any specials. Often Disney theme park tickets online are much less expensive than purchasing tickets at the gate.

If you’re itching to try a totally new travel experience, don’t be afraid to break out the traditional travel arrangements and try something new. The Mediterranean Sea has long been a popular tourist destination with pristine beaches, mild weather and beautiful sunny skies. But most resorts areas around the Mediterranean have become crowded and not as relaxing as you might like. If you’re ready to truly experience a Mediterranean vacation, here’s how.

Find Small Destinations

If you want to feel the sand beneath your feet and feel the warm sun on your face without hundreds of your closest friends at your elbows, skip the large resort areas and find smaller areas that are less well known. For example, southern Italy is a very popular area for tourists, but by heading out past Sicily to the small island of Malta, you’re able to experience the same weather and beach condition as well as centuries of history and tradition without crowds and over inflated resort prices.

If you do travel to Malta or other small islands, the lack of crowds brings in a lack of public transportation as well, but car hire Malta can easily remedy this situation plus offer you the means to explore the more remote sections of the island.

Stay in Local Establishments

The local bed and breakfast or renting a room from a family in the area is a far cry from the five star resorts and their paper umbrellas, but you will be amazed at how welcoming families along this region are, and how much you can learn and enjoy about the area by living in it.

Around the world resorts are created as a world apart from its surroundings meaning a resort in Jamaica isn’t much different than a resort in Greece, with the obvious difference of the staff and location. If you want to experience the Mediterranean, don’t hide behind ornate walls and gold courses, stay in a hotel in the city or find a short-term rental that will let you rub shoulders with locals and let you eat in the family restaurants and cafes that give the area such a fine reputation for its food.

Travel Off-Season

The beaches and beauty of the Mediterranean are just as beautiful in the summer as they are in the late spring or early fall. Avoid the most popular seasons and travel when there are less vendors and tourists to accompany you. If you travel during the less popular times of the year, you’ll also be able to take advantage of off-season discounts.
