garage_sales_smallSpring cleaning is the perfect excuse for a massive garage sale and can bring in extra income just in time for summer adventures. Garage sales are fun and exciting ways to get rid of items you can’t bear to throw away but aren’t interested in keeping anymore.

How to decide what to sell

The easiest way to determine what will be sold during your sale is to separate items into four containers. One container will be for items you are keeping, the second for items being donated, the third for trash and the fourth for garage sale items. If you are unsure of an item, set it aside and come back at a later time. Watching someone walk away with an object you really wanted to keep during your garage sale is heart breaking so be sure the decision you have made is one you will be able to stick with. The best garage sales have a variety of items for sale from furniture to books and a large selection of price ranges.

Pricing Items for Your Garage Sale

Once you have decided what to sell, check websites such as www.ebay.com for pricing ideas. For books and media, www.half.com is a great resource for pricing. Most websites will seem to have very low prices but remember, the goal is to sell the item. For more valuable pieces, there are websites and books similar to blue books for vehicles that will also give a fair price for collectibles.

Advertising Your Garage Sale

Most communities will allow you to put up posters and fliers about your event. Churches and gyms are also great places to advertise your sale as well as community websites. If you can coordinate several homes for a larger community garage sale advertising will be much easier and you will have a larger turnout for your event. Word of mouth is also an inexpensive, effective way to draw people to your sale.

Start advertising about a week before the actual sale and remember to be specific. If you want to be done by 6pm, indicate the time frame on your advertisement. If you are reaching out in the community, be sure to include directions and an address or street name. Be careful of what information you include on your fliers to avoid unwelcome guests.

Easy Step By Step Instructions For Having a Garage Sale
  • Clean out your home to find all the items you no longer use or need.
  • Separate items to sort them for donations and the sale.
  • Price the items using online research as necessary
  • Advertise your sale in advance to reach as many potential buyers as possible.
Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions When Having a Garage Sale

Be sure to find out in your community if there are deed restrictions regarding garage/yard/moving sales before you hold one. Some restrictions entail large fines for holding sales on your property and may have specific steps that need to be taken in order to get approval for the sale ahead of time.
