How To Buy Insurance for a Classic Car - July 4th, 2008

insurance for a classic carClassic cars are more than just another set of wheels on the road. They are powerful machines with a sense of style and grace that is all their own. Unfortunately, classic cars do come with a potential fly in the proverbial ointment. Classic car insurancecan be tricky to find at reasonable rates. Here’s how to buy classic car insurance.

Find Classic Car Dealers

The first step in buying classic car insurance is finding a reputable dealer. If you are driving a collectible car, you might first start with the brand of the car. An enthusiast club for Jaguar, for example, has arranged classic car insurance policies for Jags. The same may be true for your own vehicle. There are other dealers or clubs who offer insurance on all manners of classic cars including kits and antique motorcycles.

Get a Insurance Quote

The second option is to get a quote for the coverage of your particular vehicle. Your car and you, the driver, may have to meet certain requirements such as age, driving experience and storage conditions for your vehicle. Get as many quotes a possible to have a basis of comparison without overwhelming yourself.

Examine the Quotes

Next you must examine the quoted rates. Be mindful that different companies include different features in their plans. Classic cars are investments and tend to appreciate over time. Does each plan cover appreciation? Is there a premium for the amount of time you actually drive the car? Are you even allowed to drive the car more than a few miles?

Make an Insurance Choice

When you’ve made a list of pros and cons of each plan, carefully consider your options along with your lifestyle. Then, choose the plan that is best for you. It may not be the cheapest. Remember, a classic car is a true investment of time and energy. It is most likely your passion and should be treated, and protected, as such.

How To Buy a New Car - July 4th, 2008

buy a new car
Buying a car can be one of the most stressful times in order to get the right one for you. With all the different styles and colors you can easily get duped into buying a useless car for an extortionate price. By reading the following you will have an understanding of what to look out for and avoid any nasty surprises.

How do you choose the perfect car for you?

Before you start your search for a new car you need to decide what you intend to use it for, if your planning on getting a car for regular family vacations then a sports car with only two seats will be of no use, at the other end of the spectrum if your looking for a fast, stylish classy car you will not want an estate car with loads of excess storage space.

Consider your options

You should consider more then just the looks when choosing a new car. Parkers.co.uk is a great site which you can view every car’s miles per gallon, 0 to 60 speed, top speed, break horse power and every important factor that you should know about your potential new car. Another main factor you need to consider is the insurance group, you should always get an insurance quote before you buy a new car so you know you won’t be paying extortionate price.

If you’re younger you may not even be able to get insured on the car you are wishing to buy so that’s another advantage of checking prior to buying. The insurance plays a very important role when considering new cars, sometimes you can be paying just as much per year in insurance as the total cost of the car. Also on parkers.co.uk it will give you some of the advantages and disadvantages on that particular model which may influence your decision.

Look out for:

There are many things that you can look out for in order to ensure your buying a quality car from a reputable dealer. The first thing is that you should shop around for a while after you have decided what car you want. Compare the different models along with the mileage and year on each car so you get an estimate price that you will need to pay.

If you have found the right car you don’t want to jump into buying it, as hard as it may seem. Buying the first car you see can be the biggest mistake you can make and cost you even more in the long run. You need to avoid the bigger car dealers as they often over charge you to make a bigger profit margin on each car.

The same can be found in the lesser popular local dealer as they often seem to have deals that are too good to be true, more times then not, they will be. Always check the mileage of the car as this is one of the most important factors as it shows the true age and quality of the vehicle, a car with high mileage may be liable for technical faults which can be an expensive job to correct.

You should always check around the outside and inside of any car before you make an offer to ensure that it’s good value for money and most of all safe to drive on the road. If possible take a mechanic so they can check over the car guaranteeing it’s mechanically sound and doesn’t have excess rust for its age or any oil leaks etc. Before you make a decision take the desired car on a test drive to see how it handles, even little things down to the clutch stiffness can manipulate your final decision so it’s always best to pick a variety of cars and test each and every one.

You can buy new cars from local dealers or check around the internet which gives you the benefit of checking in your own time in the comfort on your own home. If you’re checking on the internet you can see pictures but you need to see a car in real life to see the quality of the car as you can only see what’s shown in pictures which can mislead certain people.

How to Deal with a Surprise Pregnancy - July 2nd, 2008

When you see an unexpected blue line or in our digital age, a glaring “Pregnant,” your world may grind to a halt. You’re pregnant. You didn’t plan it, and you’re not sure what to do about it. This is a high stress situation, but your first step is to stop worrying about that positive and let your initial emotions process. Then, when you’ve finished shaking, screaming, yelling, cheering and crying you’re ready to deal with your surprise pregnancy.

Assess Your Emotions

Your emotions will tell you a lot about what to do next with your pregnancy. If you listen to your body for a few days and try to understand the whirl of emotions you might get a sense of how much you actually want to be pregnant. Is there an underlying dread about becoming a parent or are you excited about the possibility? As hard as it is, leave your marital, financial and other situations out of the emotional mix right now. The question now is what do YOU want?

Assess Your Situation

Your next step is to assess your situation. This time leave emotion out of the mix while you look at your living conditions, your relationship and your means of support. There are almost no conditions that can’t be overcome if you’re ready to become a parent, but knowing what you have on your side and what you’re up against will help you clear the way. Look at everything with the eyes of a potential mother, not just a girl or woman.

Option A or Option B

At this point you will likely clue your significant other into the pregnancy and be sure to give him time to process the news. Remember how you felt and let him vent and express his emotions. The first few hours are no indication of how he’ll feel once the shock has worn off.

Then the two of you will have to make an important decision. Do you want to keep the baby. You likely already know the answer to this based on your emotional response and your situation. Your emotions should win our over situations, however since you can work to change your situation.

Hear your partner out, but trust in your own instincts. Your partner is an important part of this decision, but you will be responsible for the next nine months. Only you can create a healthy baby if you choose to continue the pregnancy. There is no need to discuss adoption or any other plan at this point except possible a sneaky marriage if you’re trying to hide the “surprise” factor.

Act on Your Decision

If you decided to abort the pregnancy, follow the requirements set forth in your state. Realize that there is a timeframe on your decision and laws may require you take certain steps before carrying out the procedure. If you decide to continue the pregnancy, arrange prenatal care immediately to get started on vitamins and a healthy diet to be sure your baby grows to be as healthy as possible.

Plan for Parenthood

Once you’ve started a pregnancy, you have eight months or so to prepare to become a parent. This might be enough time to train in a new career or finish a current program. It’s enough time to move to a new area or move back home to a better support system if your relationship doesn’t work out. Eight months is plenty of time to get married, get divorced or separate. You might even start a new relationship while pregnant.

It’s impossible to see into the future, obviously, but spend this eight months getting ready to become a parent. Even if you offer your baby in adoption, you’ll still need to understand the process of labor and delivery. You’ll also need to make arrangements for the future of your child.

If you’re keeping the baby, find a safe home for the two of you and a means of support. If you’re married this will be far easier than if you’re single, but there are many programs and support systems in place for single mothers. Regardless of marital status, find a support system through your family, a community center or religious center to help you through the process.

How to Decide How Many Kids to Have - July 2nd, 2008

Before you have your first child, it’s easy to plan your future family. Once the first child comes your plans might change. And if you’re completely enamored with your first and can’t image your life without another three or four angels, a second child might make you examine your feelings again. Kids are the absolute best reward for a lot of hard work, but only you can decide how many kids to have.

Your Temperament

Your temperament can make a huge impact on the number of children you have. Parents must be patient and able to deal with the daily stress of children making demands of their time and energy as well as the constant issues that will arise throughout the day. Granted this work is paid off grandly with hugs and kisses, but if hugs and kisses won’t keep your emotions in check on a very stressful day, fewer kids might be the answer.

Your Age

Your age obviously impacts your future family. If you have your first child at thirty-nine, you’re already limited on the number of children you can have. Many mothers over thirty-five have one or two children as thirty-five is considered a higher risk age for child bearing. On the other hand, if you have your first child very young, you may decide to have an only child to give you an opportunity to reclaim your own passions and pursuits as soon as possible.

Your Spouse

Your spouse will have a huge impact on the number of children you have. If he wants an only child and you want four, unless he is willing to be convinced a house full of children is really okay, you’re likely stuck at one.

Your Finances

Numbers matter, especially with children. Diapers and formula can add up to hundreds per month and clothes, shoes and food for older children are not cheap either. Every child you have will be expensive even without adding in college costs. Granted the first child will be the biggest budget buster. After that each child represents a few more diapers and another plate at the table.

Your Other Children

If you have a child with special needs, you may decide to have only one child so that you can devote your time and attention to his needs. Some parents have additional children to build a caring family, but every child requires a huge portion of your time and attention. You can’t short one child for the sake of another.

Your Marriage

If your marriage is solid and your partner is a partner in parenting and pregnancy, multiple children are natural additions to the family. But if your marriage is not quite this ideal or your spouse works long hours or isn’t as involved in parenting as you are, fewer children will be easier to manage.

Your Time

Time is a finite resource. There are only twenty-four hours in the day and you likely spend close to eight of them sleeping. The remaining sixteen hours are divided between everything you must do in a day as well as meaningful time with each member of your family. The fewer family members there are, the more individual time each is able to enjoy. If your time is already stretched due to the requirements of your career or your lifestyle, fewer children will allow you to devote more time and attention to each.

Your Instincts

Sometimes you just know you’re meant to be the mother of many children and you love the idea of a loud, noisy home. If your instincts are telling you to have many children and your spouse is willing, there is absolutely no reason to not indulge yourself. Fill up your home with racing children and bouncing babies. Each child brings so much magic to a home, a home filled with kids is a home brimming with love.

How to Have a Girl - July 2nd, 2008

If you are not interested in genetic engineering or artificial insemination, there is no certain way of conceiving one gender versus the other. There are, however, various theories about how to increase your chances of a specific gender.

Selecting Gender

According to surveys more than 90% of expectant parents have a preference in regard to their unborn child’s gender. The reasons behind the preferences are varied, and when parents don’t get their wish, they adapt and are overjoyed to welcome any new baby to their home. But if you are ready for a girl and want to try to tip the scales, here’s how:

The Shettles Method

Doctor Shettles penned the most popular method designed to increase the chances of a female. Before beginning the method, you must understand the rationale behind it. Women produce an egg every month during ovulation. The egg is always carrying an X chromosome. Two Xs make a girl and one X (the egg) plus one Y make a boy.

Men are responsible for the second X or Y. Each sperm is assigned one chromosome. When a male ejaculates, he sends 200-400 million sperm into the vagina that immediately begin searching for the released egg. Out of those millions, only one sperm gets the prize, and the chromosome of that one unites with the X of the egg, and the miracle has begun.

The Shettles method offers instruction on how to get more X-carrying sperm to the egg and beat out the Ys.

Conceiving a Girl

To actively work at conceiving a girl, you must know your cycle. Chart your cycle for a couple of months to see what day you begin your period and what day you are ovulating. You can do this using an ovulation kit or basal temperature. Then, once you know the day you will ovulate, begin having sex immediately following the end of your period. Have sex at least once a day until two or three days before ovulation. Then stop. (Sorry, guys.)

Y-carrying sperm swim faster than X-carrying sperm. The boy-makers also tend to die out more quickly. By stopping three days before ovulation, you are ensuring the only sperm left waiting around for the released egg are the longer-lasting, slow-swimming X-carriers. (Sperm can live up to 5-7 days inside a woman’s body.) When the remaining sperm meet up with the egg, it is far more likely an X sperm will get the honors.

Doctor Shettles also suggests having sex in the missionary position to deposit sperm as close to the entrance of the vagina as possible. He also suggests the woman not orgasm during sex (Sorry, girls.) An orgasm can make the vaginal environment alkaline which can kill off sperm more quickly preventing any pregnancy.

How to Protect Your Car - July 1st, 2008

If you drive a nondescript sedan, or any car for that matter, you should be worried about potential theft. Sedans such as the Camry and Taurus are among the most commonly stolen vehicles, but every vehicle can be at risk if you don’t keep it safe.

Car Safety

Car safety is relatively straightforward. For the most part it’s common sense. You should have a safe place to store your car, it should be locked, and there should be theft deterrent systems in place. Car security can get deluxe with extra deterrent and notification systems, and these can never hurt – especially if you live in an area with a high rate of theft or damage.

Car Storage

The first step to protect your car is to give it someplace safe to live. The best place is a garage that locks every night. If you lock your car up inside its own garage, you already have the utmost in security – at least at night and when the car isn’t out and about. Of course, we don’t all have the option of a garage, but the more safety measures you can arrange – a parking lot with gated entry, a protected ally versus the main street, covered parking, etc… the safer your car will be. Remember, you’re not only protecting your car from theft, you’re also protecting it from the weather and falling objects, such as tree limbs.

Basic Car Security

APW Independence Day Treat $50 OFF

A lot of the basic security for your vehicle is up to you. Locking your doors and keeping valuables out of site will help keep criminals away. Locking the doors while you drive, especially if you’re stopping and starting at streetlights can also keep carjackers and other criminals out of your vehicle if they try to hop in. Keeping your windows up and only cracking it at the top should you need to speak to someone outside will protect you as well. Never open it wide enough to let a hand in – unless you’re in the drive-thru or cruising on the highway.

Theft Deterrent

You should also have a theft deterrent system on board if possible. The more systems you have the better. The old school system was an alarm which blared or talked to the world should your car be jostled at all. Unfortunately, these alarms go off so frequently for other reasons, they are ignored for the most part and aren’t a deterrent at all. The newer standard deterrent is a chip in the key that must be present for the engine to start. This makes for large keys, but it keeps your car safe from hotwiring or copied keys.

Read your owner’s manual to see what theft deterrent systems you already have on board and visit an auto shop or electronics store to see what other options you have. Products range from basic to the very high end including vehicle tracking systems should your car be taken.

The more systems in place, the better – but only if you do your part by locking your doors and parking in safe place when your vehicle isn’t in use.

Easy Step By Step

  1. 1. Always find a secure place to park
  2. 2. Make sure the vehicle is always locked
  3. 3. Use a theft deterrent device if possible
  4. 4. Use common sense

Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions

Common sense will take you a long way to protecting your vehicle but, sometimes all the prevention in the world will not make any difference. Be sure to keep your insurance up to date, and have a plan should something happen to your only means of transportation.

How to Jumpstart a Car or Truck - July 1st, 2008

If you leave your headlights on or the radio on too long while you work outside, your battery will run down and die. Then your car won’t start and you’ll need a jump. This sounds easy enough until you find yourself with the hood open and no clue what to do next.

Jumper Cables

If your vehicle is prone to breakdowns or you have an older (and faulty) battery, you should carry a set of jumper cables around with you at all times. Throw them in the trunk, and you’ll never have to worry about getting stranded – so long as there is someone nice enough to jump you. You can buy jumper cables at any automotive store that sells car or truck parts. Ironically enough you can also buy a new battery if you have an old one, but I digress.

Align the Engines

Jumper cables are long, but they will require the two engines be close together. As your car isn’t moving, you should ask your new best friend to pull in facing your car or next to it and then stretch the jumper cables between you.

Affix the Cables

To get the right currents, you should use the color coding of the jumper cables to guide you in placing them on the battery. Both cars should be turned off, and before you affix anything to your battery, check your owner’s manual to be sure there isn’t a special way to jump your car. You’ll want to protect the onboard computers from rouge electrical currents. When you’re sure your car is okay to jump (according to the manufacturer), get ready to hook up the cables.

The red cable and hook attaches to the positive terminal on each of the batteries. The black cable, or the negative cable goes on any unpainted metal surface in the engine where it can ground out – such as a bolt or bracket. The other black cable should be clamped the same way on your best friend’s car.

Jump Your Car

Once all four cables are attached, try starting your previously dead engine. If it doesn’t start, reposition your red cable and try again. Try a few more times until your engine catches. Then leave your car running while you carefully remove the clamps in reverse order one at a time.

Allow your engine to run for thirty minutes to allow the battery to fully charge. You can idle or drive and it will charge again.

Of course, you should also be sure you are following up on regular can and truck maintenance to identify any serious problems that might occur with your battery before they begin.

Easy Step By Step

  1. 1. Acquire a pair of jumper cables
  2. 2. Align the engines
  3. 3. Attach the cables
  4. 4. Start the assisting vehicle
  5. 5. Wait 10 minutes
  6. 6. Remove the cables
  7. 7. Start your vehicle

Warnings, Advice, and Suggestions

Be careful not to touch your two cable leads together when it is attached to the assisting vehicle. While 12 volts is not a lot of electricity, and there are not a lot of amps to be worried about, there is enough power that it can still make you really regret getting careless.

If you are having a hard time finding jumper cables, try asking someone near a local store if they have a set you can borrow

How To Install Sub Woofers - June 30th, 2008

The majority of car manufacturers do not include sub woofers with the factory produced stereo systems in their cars. Correctly installing sub woofers into your car can be a somewhat complicated procedure so you want to pay close attention to the instructions. Many car enthusiasts purchase sub woofers that are enclosed in a prefabricated enclosure box because of ease of installation.

The following instructions will aid in the installation of sub woofers into your vehicle.

BetterCables.com - High Performance Cables

Remove Old Equipment

The first thing you need to do when installing sub woofers is to remove all of the carpeting or other material and then thoroughly clean the metal area below. Take care that you do not damage the carpeting as you will eventually be putting it back into your trunk. Once that step has been completed you will want to take a hair dryer and completely heat the sound deadening material. Another option would be to leaving the sound deadening material outside is a spot that gets a lot of sunshine during the day and let it heat up that way.

Next you need to take spray glue and apply it to the exposed metal surface of your trunk while peeling the back of the sound deadening material that you just heated up. Apply the sound deadening material to the area that you just sprayed glue onto as you continue to heat the material during application.

Sound Deadening

High performance audio video cables

While you are applying the sound deadening material to your trunk you want to be extremely careful to apply the material evenly to make sure that it bonds correctly together. After you are finished then replace the carpeting or material that you removed from your trunk earlier. Once this process has been completed you need to get ready to get your speaker system going. Your speaker hookups will need to be reconfigured in order for the front and back speakers that are already in your speaker system to be using the front two channels of your amplifier. You will see that your amplifier should be equipped with a high-pass crossover that will enable you to control those two speakers.

The rear channels of your amplifier will need to be bridged into mono which will allow your amplifier to produce twice the amount of power. There are instructions that should have come with your amplifier that will explain to you how to do this task. Now you are all set to get your sub woofers hooked up. You can start by using 12-gauge speaker wire to wire in you two sub woofers. You amplifier’s rear channel should be equipped with a low-pass crossover. You will need to run some tests to determine which crossover point is going to get the best performance from your sub woofers.

Brace The Enclosure

Metal L shaped brackets are the absolute best things to use to brace the enclosure and the box will be most stable if it is secured right to the floor of the trunk or a wall of the trunk. It is a smart idea to apply some type of sealant around the the brackets that you will be using to secure that box so that no air will be able to escape from the box.
